I am an extremely motivated and passionate English teacher who strives to bring out the very best in all of my students. I am a friendly and enthusiastic tutor who believes that pupils of any ability have the potential to succeed academically with the right opportunities and environment. I form a tailored approach to tutoring which takes into account the needs and challenges of each individual.

I am a self employed English Tutor who works with primary, secondary, and international students. I tutor students preparing for the 11+ and other Common Entrance Exams, where I have received up to date training, and those preparing for their GCSE and AS/A-Level English exams. I have experience working with students across the state comprehensive, grammar, and private sectors, including a number of students at some of the highest ranked prep and independent schools in the country such as Ludgrove School, Sydenham High School and Dulwich College. I am also an English Consultant and have worked with GCSE students in schools across England in improving exam outcomes.

I was Head of English at an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding,’ mixed, secondary school in Tower Hamlets, London. During this period I led on delivering exceptional GCSE and A-Level English results and on transforming the Key Stage 3 English curriculum. I have extensive experience of working with ESL pupils and students with a range of special educational needs including dyslexia, autism and SLCN.

My strong academic background allows me to go above and beyond the scope of the English curriculum and to offer first-rate tutoring of academic reading and writing skills. I achieved 1st class honours in BA Politics at the University of Leicester and completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School. I was awarded the PGCE in English from Canterbury Christ Church University and achieved QTS whilst training on the competitive Teach First Leadership Development Programme.

I taught English Language and Literature to students aged 11-18 at secondary schools for 9 years and have worked as an AQA English Language examiner. I have tutored with some of the country’s top agencies including Bonas MacFarlane, Owl Tutors and Dulwich Tutors, and have experience of working in the prison education sector. I tutor both the AQA, Pearson/IGCSE Edexcel and CAIE specifications for GCSE English.

I have an up to date, enhanced DBS certificate which is annually renewed and shared with parents prior to the first session. I am also a member of The Tutors’ Association.

Please get in touch if you would like any more information about myself. I am also keen to hear from other tutors and teachers and would love to share resources.

Parent reviews

Dominic has been tutoring my Year 10 son since September 2024 in preparation for his GCSE English exams next year. From the first lesson, Dominic quickly established a positive relationship with my child.  Dominic’s calm, patient manner – combined with his gentle questioning skills – enabled my son to engage with the GCSE English course content in a stress-free, enjoyable way. As an experienced teacher, Dominic has excellent subject knowledge and a thorough understanding of the GCSE syllabus. He tailors the lessons to meet my son’s individual needs; his input has enabled my son to develop a deeper understanding of the texts studied and to write more effective topic sentences, demonstrating an understanding of authorial intent. Most importantly, my son can feel himself improving in class and the positive momentum has been noted by his class teacher.

Dominic has been tutoring my son virtually for the last 6 months, since just before he started in Year 7 at a competitive grammar school. The objective of the tutoring was to support my son to get ahead in his English work in school and work with him on areas for improvement. Dominic has been absolutely fantastic from Day 1 and very responsive to mine and my son’s requests. I email him regularly with updates of the curriculum and work being covered in school and Dominic tailors his weekly lessons to mirror these, stretch and enhance hisgrasp of the relevant topics. The online format works seamlessly via Zoom and a Googledocs document which both Dominic and my son work on simultaneously. My son has not had a formal assessment in Year 7 yet but has done well in class tests, which I am hoping will continue with Dominic’s guidance. Most importantly, my son very much enjoys the weekly lessons and engages well with Dominic’s personable tutoring style.
